For the AUA, the beginning of 2024 was more than just a time of reflection and rejuvenation. It was also a time of celebration and pride as January marked the first anniversary of JU Open Plus (JUOP; Figures 1-12)!

Launched in January 2023, JUOP was born out of the AUA’s commitment to broadening the horizons of scientific discovery and knowledge dissemination. It is the third addition to our family of journals, but our first fully open access journal.

In its inaugural year, JUOP has seamlessly integrated into our journal family, “The Voice of Urology,” complementing both The Journal of Urology® and Urology Practice® by supporting a wide range of manuscripts and facilitating the efficient transfer of submissions through cascade transfers. So far, 291 articles from The Journal of Urology® and 72 articles from Urology Practice® have been suggested for cascade transfer. Our goal: ensuring each paper finds its ideal home within our journal family.

Outside of the cascade process, JUOP has received 126 submissions, 81 of which were accepted for publication. We’re extremely grateful for the robust support from authors who have a long-standing history with our journals, and we’re also inspired to see the influx of global contributors who are now experiencing the AUA for the first time through JUOP.

Why Open Access?

JUOP’s open-access model has been instrumental in amplifying the reach of groundbreaking research, allowing unrestricted access to the latest findings and insights in urology. This openness not only fosters global collaboration, but also aligns with the evolving landscape of scholarly publications.

Authors are responsible for covering the publication fee for their articles, a payment that brings 2-fold benefits:

  • Authors retain full copyright ownership over their contributions.
  • Readers receive unrestricted access to full-length articles online, allowing the public to read the content without the need for login credentials, payment, or a personal or institutional subscription.

Note: AUA members receive a discount of more than 15% on their JUOP publication fees!

Looking to the Future

In a significant stride toward further elevating the journal’s accessibility, we have initiated the process for indexing JUOP with the National Library of Medicine, ensuring that the research published will gain even broader recognition and impact.

As we forge ahead, we encourage the urological community to continue contributing to JUOP’s growing repository of knowledge. Whether you’re a seasoned AUA author or a first-time contributor, your research can find a distinguished place within our pages!

Stay updated with the latest from JUOP and join the conversation by following us on Instagram (@ju_openplus) and X/Twitter (@JUOpenPlus). Together, let’s continue shaping the future of urological research, one publication at a time. Our Editorial Office team stands by to answer any of your questions (Publication@AUAnet.org). Here’s to many more years of pioneering open access publishing with JUOP!
