SPECIALTY SOCIETIES SWIU Webinar Series: Advancing Women in Urology

By: Suzette E. Sutherland, MD, MS, FPMRS, University of Washington, Seattle, SWIU Past President 2017-2018; Jannah Thompson, MD, FPMRS, Trinity Health Medical Group UroGynecology, West Michigan, SWIU Past President 2021-2022 | Posted on: 19 Apr 2024

In March 2023, the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU) initiated a regularly scheduled virtual webinar series, “Advancing Women in Urology,” which is dedicated to the mission of SWIU: To support the professional development and career advancement of women urologists and urologic researchers through education, advocacy, and mentorship. As cochairs of this endeavor, we have had the great privilege of developing and hosting a meaningful educational series that focuses on a variety of topics meant to support and enhance professional and career development. These topics include addressing work/life integration strategies, preparing for surgical practice, considerations for family planning, navigating promotions, and fostering resilience. Most recently, we hosted Arghavan Salles, MD, PhD, a nationally known scholar from the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University. We explored the real source of the infamous “queen bee phenomenon” rooted in repetitive, systemic gender-based disparities, and how it relates to a more nontraditional “labyrinth of leadership” for women in surgery.

As an organization, SWIU is proud of the programming we have been able to provide over the last year, and we are very excited about current plans for future webinars (Table). In many cases, we provide quality programming from within the SWIU membership, thereby amplifying the expertise and achievements of our female colleagues. The talent from within is tremendous and inspiring! And in some cases, with generous financial support from various industry partners (ie, Solv Wellness, Boston Scientific, Axonics), we have been able to secure national content experts, ensuring relevant, up-to-date programs with robust discussions for our intellectual audience.

We hope you will tune in to join us for our future webinars. More information and registration links can be found at www.swiu.org. All programs are recorded and housed on the SWIU website as well, so please enjoy them at your leisure.

Please join us at our annual AUA breakfast meeting in San Antonio on Sunday, May 5, 2024.
