WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: What I Learned From Dr Denstedt

By: Bodo Knudsen, MD, FRCSC, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus; Henry A. Wise II, MD, Vice Chair, The Ohio State University, Columbus | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

Dr Denstedt is one of the most honest, professional, forthright, and hardworking individuals I know. If you looked up the definition of “straight shooter” in a dictionary, there would be a picture of Dr Denstedt. It is this property that he instilled in me years ago when I was a fellow with him at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada (see Figure). He demonstrated daily the importance of being honest and forthright with staff, colleagues, and patients. You always knew where you stood with Dr Denstedt, and he always had your best interests at heart and wanted nothing more than for you to succeed. As I transitioned from fellowship to academic medical practice at The Ohio State University, I always reflected on how Dr Denstedt would handle things in his calm, thoughtful approach and tried my best to emulate this. This, more often than not, helped me navigate through challenges I would encounter. However, if I needed further advice, Dr Denstedt was always available via email or a phone call and provided thoughtful advice and assurance. As I work with the next generation of urologists who are training as residents and fellows, I try to instill in them the same principles I learned from Dr Denstedt. It goes without saying that many things would run a lot smoother if more people took Dr Denstedt’s approach. I am forever grateful for having had the privilege to train with him and then having him as a lifelong friend and colleague.
